Funding Opportunities
RCoA Grants and Awards
closing date: Friday 2 September 2016, 5pm
There is now just over a week left to apply for one of the grants and awards funded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for the purpose of supporting research, education or travel connected with the study of anaesthesia.
The following grants and awards are available:
Ernest Leach Research Fund
Up to £2,500 available for research purposes
Sargant Fund
Up to £2,500 available for education and research purposes
Belfast Fund
Up to £600 available for educational purposes

RCoA Payne Stafford Tan Award
The aim of this Award is to mark excellence in clinical practice, teaching or research in anaesthesia, critical care or pain management. It is open to any Fellow or Member of the College, and comprises a grant (to a maximum of £1,000) to be used for educational purposes. Nominations are now invited for the 2016 Award.

RCoA Maurice P Hudson Prize
Dr Maurice Hudson was a consultant anaesthetist in London, took the DA in 1936, was awarded the FFARCS in 1948 and had a particular interest in dental anaesthesia. The late Dr Maurice Hudson's daughter generously donated money to the College in memory of her father for an annual prize for the best paper on his favourite subject; resuscitation. The criteria for this prize has now been extended and the prize will be awarded to the anaesthetic or intensive care trainee who is the principal author of the best paper relating to the management of acutely ill patients published, or accepted for publication, in a recent peer reviewed journal. A prize of £500 is available this year.

RCoA Macintosh Professorship
Macintosh Professorships are aimed at established clinical or laboratory researchers who are already performing at a high level. Their purpose is to recognise and disseminate the work of the award holders and facilitate their progress in the academic world. Recipients of the award will have a national or international reputation in their field. Their curriculum vitae will be consistent with an individual who is performing at, or is on the cusp of, professorial level through research, innovation, and leadership. Those who show equivalent excellence in teaching and education will also be eligible for the award.
Recipients are required to give a keynote lecture at a meeting organised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists or its associated Faculties, other related organisations and specialist societies. The lecture is commemorated by the presentation of a certificate. Applications are open to Fellows and Members of the College and other clinicians and scientists involved in anaesthesia, critical care and pain management within the UK.

NIAA Research Grants: Round 2 2016
The second round of this year's NIAA grants is open for applications. Funding in this round is being offered by the AAGBI/Anaesthesia, Anaesthesia-Wiley, BJA/RCoA, ACTACC (previously ACTA), DAS, and NACCSGBI.
The deadline for applications is 12 noon, Friday 23 September.

BJA/RCoA International Collaborative Grant 2017
The British Journal of Anaesthesia is delighted to give advance notice of a new International Collaborative grant to be awarded in Spring 2017.
The grants are intended to support internationally collaborative research projects in Anaesthesia, Critical Care or Pain Management and may be for salaries or for the purchase of items of equipment.
Applicants should be from outside of Great Britain & Ireland. The proposal must involve real, credible, collaboration with an individual / institution based in Great Britain & Ireland. Pilot / feasibility studies are welcome.
£100,000 per grant is available, and there will be funding available to make at least one award.

New joint RCoA/NIHR CRN Awards
Do you know an NHS clinician who deserves recognition? The RCoA is pleased to announce the launch of a joint Award in conjunction with the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN). The Awards are designed to recognise NHS clinicians (Consultants and trainees) who are making outstanding contributions to clinical research, particularly in relation to NIHR CRN Portfolio research studies.
Applicants must be NHS clinicians (clinical academics are not eligible) and must be a member or fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Clinicians can enter under one of two categories: Consultant/SAS or Trainee, and the Award prize is £1,000 for each category.
To apply, there is a short application form to complete. The deadline for applications is midnight Sunday 18 September 2016.
The awards will be presented during the Royal College of Anaesthetists' Anniversary Meeting 2017, taking place 8-9 March 2017 in London. Award winners must be available to attend this event, and complimentary places will be allocated.

NIAA Comprehensive Review & Strategy
We are happy to announce that our Comprehensive Review 2014-15 has now been published and is available to download.
The Comprehensive Review celebrates the successes of the NIAA and its related projects over the past two years with updates on research grant funding, academic anaesthesia, the Health Services Research Centre, as well as National Audit Projects and the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit.
As part of the Comprehensive Review document we are also launching the five-year NIAA Strategy, which sets out the vision and mission of our work up until 2020.

National Emergency Laparotomy Audit
The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit will once again be sponsoring a Trainee Poster Prize at the AAGBI Winter Scientific Meeting. The prize will be given for the best poster that uses local hospital NELA data to bring about an improvement in the quality of care.
The criteria for a successful poster will be judged on whether it:
•Demonstrates use of local NELA data
•Uses established quality improvement (QI) methodology
•Has multidisciplinary involvement (ideally)
•Demonstrates an improvement in care, which could be improvements in process or outcome

Perioperative Medicine Local Lead
Does your hospital have a Perioperative Medicine (POM) Lead? As part of the RCoA Perioperative Medicine Programme, we are working to identify a POM Lead within every NHS hospital to act as a conduit between the College and local perioperative teams and develop local perioperative services. The Lead must be a consultant anaesthetist and have the support of their Clinical Director. Please pass this on to any colleagues you think may be interested in the role. A list of current Leads can be found on the POM website.

RCP/NIHR CRN Trainee award winner
Congratulations go to Dr Tom Abbott, recent winner of the joint RCP/NIHR CRN Trainee award. Dr Abbott is an MRC/BJA Clinical Research Training Fellow in perioperative medicine at Queen Mary University and Barts Health NHS Trust, and had this to say about his award win:
"A large part of my work over the last three years has been delivering two NIHR portfolio studies, the Measurement of Exercise Tolerance before Surgery (METS) study and the Prevention of Respiratory Insufficiency after Surgical Management (PRISM) trial.
METS is an international multi-centre observational cohort study of cardiopulmonary exercise testing before non-cardiac surgery and PRISM is an international multi-centre randomised controlled trial of CPAP after major abdominal surgery.
I was given this NIHR/RCP award in recognition of my contribution to these studies, in particular for innovations that I helped implement locally to develop and improve the accessibility of our research to patients. I would like to thank my supervisors, Prof Rupert Pearse and Dr Gareth Ackland, for their support and advice."
Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network
There's still time to book your space for the upcoming POM CTN Autumn Meeting, taking place in Birmingham on Wednesday 9 November. The day will combine Investigator training and up to date information on current and future trials, and the programme has recently been updated with more information on each session.

NIHR HTA Programme Board recruitment
The NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme is seeking to appoint a leader in the field of health technology assessment or related applied clinical research to undertake the duties of a Deputy Board Chair of one of the three NIHR HTA Boards.
The role will be responsible for supporting the Chair at board meetings, and will be working for one of the main HTA grant-awarding boards and making recommendations for commissioning a large portfolio of research. Other responsibilities will include contributing to the strategic development of the HTA programme.
The total time commitment for this role through attendance at meetings, providing specific advice and undertaking background and planning work will be, on average, half a day per week.

NIAA Grants Officer
Clinicians and non-clinicians are invited to apply for the position of NIAA Grants Officer. The post-holder will provide specialist advice to grant applicants, liaise with funding partners and specialist societies, and act as the outward face of the NIAA grants scheme. There is no direct payment for the role; it is supported by the cost of 1 PA per week backfilled to the post-holder's employing organisation, and will require a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week.
