NIAA Research Award open for 2022
The NIAA is pleased to re-open our Research Award for researchers/investigators that have completed a 'body of work', which will be open for applications until Monday 26 September 2022.
Applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges convened by the NIAA, and should be submitted as a summary of the applicant's research project/'body of work'. The judges will select a shortlist of applicants who will be invited to deliver a 10-minute presentation of their work in York as part of Anaesthesia Research 2022 conference which takes place 22-23 November 2022.
- Shortlisted applicants must be available to attend the NIAA Research Award presentation session of Anaesthesia Research 2022 in York on 23 November 2022.
- The overall winner will be selected by the judges and announced at the end of Day 2 of Anaesthesia Research on 23 November 2022.

The NIAA Research Award provides a valuable platform for early career researchers to showcase their work and disseminate research findings. I applied for the award in 2019, when I presented the results of my PhD, and in 2021, when I presented a summary of my on-going postdoctoral research.
As a finalist, I was afforded the opportunity to attend the Anaesthesia Research conference, to present my work and to receive feedback from the panel. On both occasions this was a really helpful experience to raise the profile of my research and to develop my network.
The NIAA Research award is targeted at early career researchers, doctoral students and academic clinicians toward the start of their research careers, when opportunities to share the results of research can be hard to come by. I would encourage any researchers toward the start of their career to consider submitting an application.

The NIAA Research Award is a great opportunity for active researchers to present their work to peers and colleagues engaged in Anaesthesia Research. I entered the award in 2019 having completed my PhD by publication (route 2). This is an alternative way of completing a PhD by compiling a themed body of published works linked by a narrative and critical appraisal. I was supported by the Difficult Airway Society as part of their DAS PhD Scholarship Program.
The application process and subsequent presentation to the judges at a national research meeting gave me a chance to reflect on the work I had undertaken and to think about the next steps in my academic development. This led to new collaborations, grant applications and publications aimed at demonstrating the impact of some of my work - an important criteria for the NIAA award.
Applying, being shortlisted or winning the award are all important opportunities for UK academic anaesthetists. The process offers a chance to benchmark your work against other researchers in the diverse field of anaesthesia research. In my case, winning the award was a springboard towards applying for honorary professorships and other national roles and awards (RCoA Macintosh Professorship 2021, the Association of Anaesthetists Featherstone Professorship 2021-23 and Difficult Airway Society Professor of Anaesthesia and Airway Management 2021).
If you are thinking of applying, then I would encourage you to talk to your supervisors and give it a go. Try to create a compelling story and be clear how your work can ultimately help the patients that we serve. Even if you don't win, the application process itself is helpful and it is great to have the opportunity to present your work to interested and engaged academic colleagues.
