New Pilot
Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme pilot - sign up now!
The Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP) is a novel system which
will measure and improve patient outcomes after major surgery. Using an innovative
but evidence-based approach, we will support clinicians in delivering high quality
perioperative care, through the use of data and shared learning. The project is being led by the NIAA-HSRC on behalf of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and supported by the Health Foundation.
If you want your hospital to be a pilot site, please liaise with your Quality Audit and Research Coordinator (QuARC). You can locate your QuARC by clicking here and emailing pqip@rcoa.ac.uk.

Introduction to Academic Anaesthesia: 14-15 September 2015
A joint meeting between the Pan-London Academic Anaesthesia Training Advisory Group (PLAATAG) and the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA). This two-day course will introduce the principles of RCTs, how to conduct a systematic review and how to engage in research.

MRC Workshop Opportunity: How to be a Good Clinical Investigator
The MRC Network of Hubs for Trials Methodology Research are giving a free one day training event for newly funded Chief Investigators on randomised clinical trials.
The workshop will include panel discussions, presentations from clinical trial units, trial funders and trial methodologists, problem solving sessions and discussions on workshop relationships.
Deadline for applications: 4 pm on 17 July 2015.
How to apply: This workshop is free to shortlisted applicants, but spaces are limited. A contribution to travel costs will be available for invited delegates. Applicants must be a new CI on a randomised clinical trial which is already currently funded.
To apply please email a 2-page CV detailing your career to date and a cover letter containing the title and funder of your trial, and a copy of the trial abstract to emma.tomlinson@ucl.ac.uk with the subject heading: "CI workshop 2".
NIAA Grants
AAGBI / Anaesthesia Research Grants
Don't forget the deadline for the next round of AAGBI/Anaesthesia Research Grants is 5 pm on Friday 7 August 2015.
Applications should address the key points of the AAGBI's research strategy and provide value for money. Further details about how to apply can be found here.
Small RCoA Research, Travel & Education Grants
The National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia has several small grants funded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for the purpose of supporting research, education or travel connected with the study of anaesthesia. Priority will be given to educational projects, the presentation of original work or the provision of education to developing countries.
The deadline for applications is 5 pm on Friday 28 August 2015 and further details can be found here.
British Oxygen Company Chair of Anaesthesia Research Grant
Invitations are invited for the British Oxygen Company Chair of Anaesthesia Research Grant.
Funding of £60,000 per annum is available. This can support the costs of research sessions, projects or infrastructure.
Applicants must demonstrate an existing research record, the support of a senior mentor/supervisor, a credible research proposal and evidence of a supportive research environment.

John Snow iBSc Awards 2015
Seven John Snow Anaesthesia intercalated BScs have been awarded this year.
Funded by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland (AAGBI)/Anaesthesia, the British Journal of Anaesthesia/Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Neuroanaesthesia & Critical Care Society of Great Britain & Ireland (NACCSGBI), these awards are designed to support medical students undertaking research in anaesthetics and its related disciplines.

Appointments
New NIHR Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management CRN Specialty Lead
Professor Mike Grocott, Director of the NIAA's Health Services Research Centre (HSRC), has been appointed to serve as the NIHR CRN Specialty National Lead for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management.
Mike will follow in the footsteps of Professor Martin Leuwer, highly regarded as one of the leading lights of British anaesthesia.
