Professor Mike Grocott appointed as next NIAA Board Chair
The National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia is pleased to announce that following our recent open recruitment, Prof Mike Grocott has been appointed as the next Chair of the NIAA Board. Prof Grocott will take on the role from current Chair Prof Monty Mythen from July 2018. We are excited to be welcoming a new Chair during the NIAA's tenth anniversary year.
Prof Grocott brings with him a wealth of leadership expertise, academic and clinical experience. He is the Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine within Medicine at the University of Southampton and a consultant in Critical Care Medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
Mike is also the UK NIHR Clinical Research Network national specialty lead for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management and was recently appointed as an NIHR Senior Investigator. He was the founding director of the NIAA Health Services Research Centre, is an elected council member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and a former elected member of the Board of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. He has been a member of the NIAA Board and Research Council since April 2010. Mike's research interests include human responses to hypoxia, measuring and improving outcome following surgery, lung injury, and fluid therapy. He leads the Xtreme-Everest Oxygen Research Consortium and the Fit-4-Surgery Group.
On his appointment, Mike said 'I am honoured and delighted to be taking over the chair of the NIAA Board in this tenth anniversary year. The NIAA has grown from small seeds to be an internationally respected model for specialty collaboration. The NIAA is a great example of team anaesthesia working together with close collaboration between the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA), the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI), our two globally leading journals Anaesthesia and the British Journal of Anaesthesia and the specialist societies. The NIAA benefited from visionary leadership from Professors Rowbotham and Mahajan in its early years and I would like to thank Professor Monty Mythen for his outstanding leadership in that tradition over the last five years.'
We are pleased to welcome Prof Grocott to his new role on the NIAA Board and look forward to the NIAA's work developing under his leadership.
