Scientific Abstract
This research project will explore the history of the BJA since 1923, mapping and analysing its evolution into 'the premiere international journal in anaesthesia' (Hemmings 2017) and its role in promoting knowledge and practice across research and education. It aims to: (i) analyse how the BJA has promoted and supported the development of modern anaesthesia; (ii) chart the expansion of its audiences over the period; (iii) examine the BJA's provision of educational, training and social resources and the impact on the anaesthetic community and; (iv) consider how broader changes across medicine and science have been reflected in the history of the BJA.
