Title
Understanding which perioperative factors increase complexity and influence quality of life outcomes in revision lower limb arthroplasty

Amount
£10,000

Scientific Abstract
An aging and more co-morbid population, coupled with advances in prosthesis design, manufacture and surgical techniques means we are performing more complex revision arthroplasties. There is a lack of knowledge about how these more complex procedures benefit patients both in the short and the long term. There is a need to evaluate perioperative outcomes following these operations, which will allow best practice perioperative care to be established and allow for improved financial and resource planning. The Perioperative Quality Improvement Program is collecting valuable and comprehensive perioperative outcome data on hip and knee revisions nationally, and the National Joint Registry collects important data about type of prosthesis used and therefore surgical complexity. Combination of these two data sets will allow for an evaluation of the complete perioperative complexity of a revision operation, considering both anaesthetic and surgical factors.
