BJA/NIAA Research Methodology Workshop: 29 September 2014

Meeting cost: £150
Venue: Royal College of Anaesthetists, 35 Red Lion Square, London, WC1R 4SG
CPD points anticipated: 5

Overview

A joint workshop with the British Journal of Anaesthesia and the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia to introduce participants to the way in which good research should be conducted and presented.

The workshop will be useful for anaesthetists of any grade who are already involved in research or those who are about to embark on a research project. Post FRCA Specialist Registrars and Lecturers will find this meeting to be particularly appropriate to their needs since knowledge of research methodology is one of the non-clinical topics which form an important part of Post FRCA training. Even if actual research is not undertaken it is considered essential for trainees to acquire an understanding of research methodology so that they are able to critically appraise research reports in the literature.

Teaching sessions will address: developing a research idea; study design; project management; analysis; presentation and interpretation of data; dissemination of results.

Group sessions will allow participants to: provide criticism of a published research paper; design a clinical trial; detect common pitfalls in analysis and interpretation of data.

Funding Opportunities

NIAA Grants Round 2 2014

Round 2 2014 is now open and nine awards are available. The deadline for applications is noon on Friday 26 September and further information about how to apply can be found by clicking here.

All NIAA grants are reviewed by a lay member of the grant panel and this review does have a bearing on the outcome of applications. As Patient & Public Involvement in Research is increasingly becoming a mandatory part of major grant applications, the NIAA's Health Services Research Centre has formed a Patient & Public Involvement Working Group to ensure that researchers can easily access informed and constructive feedback on their proposals. If you don't have any input from a lay person, you may wish to apply for support from the group. You can find out more on our PPI pages.
