National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA)
The NELA audit is being carried out by the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia's Health Services Research Centre on behalf of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. It is being run in conjunction with surgical and other key stakeholders.
The audit has been commissioned and funded by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) and it is part of the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP). NELA is on the list of national audits for inclusion in Trusts' Quality Accounts. NELA also partners with the Clinical Effectiveness Unit of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre who provide important methodological and technical input.
The NELA project officially began on the 1st December 2012. NELA aims to look at structure, process and outcome measures for the quality of care received by patients undergoing emergency laparotomy, and will comprise an Organisational Audit and a Patient Audit. The audit tools and data-collection start dates are currently being finalised and once known will be published on the NELA website.
NELA has now started contacting NHS Trusts in England and Wales to request their participation. If your hospital or trust performs emergency laparotomy and you are interested in participating in the audit - please register your interest to participate in the audit by completing the online form.
