Results from FMRIB study on perceptual awareness during anaesthesia
Researchers at the Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB) in Oxford have recently published the results of a partially NIAA funded study which measured the slow-wave activity in an individual's brain while they are under anaesthetic. The study offers the clearest picture yet of degrees of perceptual awareness in the brain during the period of anaesthesia.
The study was funded by the MRC, the Wellcome Trust, the International Anesthesia Research Society and the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia. The full results have been published online in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
Professor Irene Tracey, Director of the FMRIB and senior author of the paper, was recently interviewed on Radio 4's Today programme and the NIAA is delighted that the project has sparked media interest.
