Funding Opportunities
Small RCoA Research, Travel & Education Grants
The NIAA has several small grants funded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for the purpose of supporting research, education or travel connected with the study of anaesthesia. Priority will be given to educational projects, the presentation of original work or the provision of education to developing countries.

Joint RCS & NIAA Perioperative Care Systematic Reviews
Following the second successful Joint RCS/NIAA meeting on Perioperative Clinical Research, held on March 4 2015, The Royal College of Surgeons of England and the NIAA have agreed to joint-fund three systematic reviews and are pleased to invite applications for systematic reviews of perioperative interventions to benefit patients.
The aim of this call is to support reviews of topics where the systematic review is seen as a step towards a funding application for a major clinical trial (+/- pilot) funded by an NIHR funding stream (e.g. HTA) or equivalent.
The deadline for applications is 12pm on Tuesday 1st September 2015.

British Oxygen Company Research Grant
Invitations are invited for the British Oxygen Company Research Grant.
Funding of £60,000 per annum is available. This can support the costs of research sessions, projects or infrastructure.
Applicants must demonstrate an existing research record, the support of a senior mentor/supervisor, a credible research proposal and evidence of a supportive research environment.

NIAA Grants - Results of Round 1 2015
Please click here to view the results of Round 1 2015. In total, 43 applications were considered over 12 categories for a requested sum of £1,440,121 and a total of 10 awards made over 6 categories to a value of £334,726.
The Health Foundation: Innovating for Improvement Scheme
£1.5m is available for up to 20 teams to test and develop innovative ideas and approaches to improve health care delivery and/or the way people manage their own health care in the UK.
Each team will receive up to £75,000 of funding to support the implementation and measurement of the project.
Teams should demonstrate how their projects will lead to direct benefits or impact on patients.
Innovating for Improvement is now open for applications and closes on 12 noon, Tuesday 4 August, 2015 and further details can be found here.

National Audit Projects
NAP6: Perioperative Anaphylaxis
NAP6 will launch on the 5th of November 2015, with a baseline survey and the start of a year's data collection. This will be followed by an allergen exposure survey in Spring 2016. NAP6 will also involve participation from Allergists and Immunologists. At present, Local Co-ordinators are being recruited across the country. If your hospital hasn't nominated a Local Co-ordinator yet, please get in touch with us, using the e-mail NAP6@rcoa.ac.uk.
NAP5: Accidental Awareness during General Anaesthesia in the UK and Ireland
The NAP5 app, iNAP5, is now available to download in the App Store.
The app features:
- Executive summary of the report
- Explanation of the classifications used within the project
- Incidence broken down by patient group - all the key stats at your fingertips
- Summary of recommendations and learning points.
PQIP Pilot
Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme pilot - sign up now!
The Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP) is a novel system which
will measure and improve patient outcomes after major surgery. Using an innovative
but evidence-based approach, we will support clinicians in delivering high quality
perioperative care, through the use of data and shared learning. The project is being led by the NIAA-HSRC on behalf of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and supported by the Health Foundation.
If you want your hospital to be a pilot site, please liaise with your Quality Audit and Research Coordinator (QuARC). You can locate your QuARC by clicking here and emailing pqip@rcoa.ac.uk.

The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit
First Patient Report
The 30th of June 2015 marked the launch of the First Patient Report of the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA). It focuses on over 20,000 patient cases submitted over an eleven month period from January to November 2014 by 191 hospitals participating in the audit. The report breaks down key outcomes and results by region and hospital so that sites can see how they compare to other participating hospitals. The NELA Project Team would like to convey its deepest thanks to everyone who has and continues to contribute to the audit without whom this report would not be possible.

Events and Meetings
Introduction to Academic Anaesthesia: 14-15 September 2015
The annual London based Introduction to Academic Anaesthesia Course will run on the 14th and 15th of September at Senate House. The meeting is aimed at those wishing to gain a greater understanding of academic anaesthesia. There will be sessions by leading experts and trainees experienced in research methods on subjects including improvement science, randomised trials, health services research, epidemiology, systematic reviews, how to prepare a poster and how to get published.

Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland's (AAGBI) WSM: 13-15 January 2016
Abstract submissions for poster presentation at the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland's (AAGBI) WSM London 2016 are now open. This year they are inviting submissions in the following categories:
- Audit
- Case Reports
- Original Research
- Survey
Authors of the best poster(s) will be awarded 'Editors' Prizes'.
New for WSM London 2016 The AAGBI have introduced the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) sponsored trainee poster prize. This is for the best poster that uses your hospital's NELA data to bring about an improvement in care.
The deadline for submission is Monday 31 August 2015.
