John Snow Anaesthesia Intercalated BSc Awards 2016
The deadline is fast approaching for this year's John Snow Anaesthesia iBSc Awards. Designed to encourage medical student interest in anaesthesia, the award is intended to fund the student's living costs. The AAGBI/Anaesthesia, RCoA/BJA, and OAA are offering awards of £2,000 and the NACCSGBI is offering one award of £1,000. Applications must be in by 5pm, Thursday 31st March. NIAA Research Grants: Round 1 2016
Grants in this round are being offered by AAGBI/Anaesthesia, RCoA/BJA, BSOA, DAS, NACCSGBI, OAA, RA-UK and VASGBI. Various amounts are available. The deadline for applications is 12 noon, Friday 22nd April. Please check the NIAA website for further details and application forms.

NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting - 14th April
We're counting down to the inaugural NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting on Thursday 14th April at RCoA. Have you booked your place? The event will see the launch of the first NIAA Research Award, with seven finalists presenting their work to a judging panel that will select the overall Award winner on the day. The event will also focus on the launch of the UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network, led by Professor Rupert Pearse. The meeting has been approved for 5 CPD points. BJA, Cochrane ACE & NIAA Research Methodology Masterclass - 7th June
This joint workshop will be useful for anaesthetists who are already involved in research, or are planning to do so. Post FRCA Specialist Registrars and Lecturers will find this meeting to be particularly appropriate to their needs since knowledge of methodology in systematic reviews is very useful when making decisions in clinical practice or writing guidelines at any level.
Teaching sessions will address: what is a systematic review, including title generation, literature search, data management, interpretation of results and how, and when to perform a meta-analysis.
Group sessions will allow participants to: provide criticism of a published research paper; design a systematic review; detect common pitfalls in analysis and interpretation of data.

RCoA Summer Symposium - 7th & 8th June
The theme of this year's Symposium is improving patient outcomes in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine. Topics will include the latest developments in the care of patient groups with specific medical and surgical conditions, as well as looking at a broad range of clinical and organisational areas of anaesthetic practice which will benefit our patients now and in the future. As well as a vibrant trade exhibition and abstract competition the event will also feature a research session titled Future Visions: how does it look?, and talks by Professor Rupert Pearse and Dr Ramani Moonesinghe. NIAA Vacancy
Academic Training Coordinator
We are recruiting an Academic Training Coordinator to promote and develop training in research for trainees in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain. The post holder will support the further development of trainee research networks, working with relevant stakeholders to promote and increase opportunities for trainees. The post is supported by the cost of 1 PA per week backfilled to the post-holder's Trust/Health Board, to enable the successful candidate to dedicate a minimum of 4 hours per week to the role. HSRC News
Vacancy: HSRC Deputy Director
There's just under a month to go until the deadline for the HSRC Deputy Director vacancy. A fixed term 3 year post, the role will involve supporting the HSRC Director, deputising where required and leading the next stage of the HSRC's Clinical Measures Programme. It is also supported by the cost of 1 PA per week backfilled to the post holder's Trust, and requires a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week. National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA)
Preliminary NELA data indicates a drop in mortality levels. The NELA Patient Report 2014-15 is now being drafted and is due to be published at the end of June 2016. Audit data collection is still on going and the NELA team would like to thank all participants for their continued hard work. Find out more about NELA here.

Clinical Lecturer vacancy at QMUL
The post of Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, or General Surgery based with the Critical Care & Perioperative Medicine Research Group at Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust is now open for applications. The research supervisor is Prof Rupert Pearse. Any of the above disciplines can be accommodated. Clinical sessions will be at the Royal London Hospital.

AAGBI Annual Congress 2016
The deadline to submit an abstract for oral (free paper) or poster presentation, or take part in the Patient Safety Prize or the SAS Audit Poster Prize at the AAGBI Annual Congress is fast approaching. All successful entrants will have their work published in the AAGBI member journal, Anaesthesia. The closing date for all abstract submissions is 23:59 on Monday 18 April 2016. Research for All report launch
The Royal College of Physicians recently launched its new report Research for All: Building a Research Active Medical Workforce. The report is the result of a survey of almost 2,000 doctors across all specialties and career levels and identifies the key barriers doctors feel prevent them from taking an active role in medical research. Some of these barriers include variable support from R&D departments, and limited access to research skills training throughout career progression. Read more about the report here.
