Welcome to the first newsletter of the year
NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting & Research Award 2017
We are pleased to announce the date of the 2nd NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting - Friday 12 May 2017. Building on the success of last year's inaugural event we have a programme planned which will cover a broad range of NIAA-related research activities including an update on the work of the Health Services Research Centre (HSRC) and the UK perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network (UK POM CTN), and a session on anaesthesia within the NIHR Clinical Research Network portfolio.
Short listed finalists of the NIAA Research Award, open to all research active investigators of anaesthesia, critical care, perioperative medicine and pain within the UK who are engaged in a higher degree programme, will also be presenting their work.

The 2017 NIAA Research Award is now also open for applications. This award aims to promote and encourage current and active researchers within the field of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine or pain research in the UK.
It will be awarded to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in scientific research relevant to anaesthesia, perioperative care or pain and will allow new investigators to achieve recognition through presentation at a national meeting with peer-review.
Applicants are invited to submit a summary of their 'body of work', this should be fully referenced and state the author's contribution. A 'body of work' will include a project that covers a clear, evidence-based research question, appropriate methods, well-conduced study/studies and statistical analysis of results drawing to a valid conclusion. A 'body of work' would typically be the equivalent to two or more research papers on one subject area or from a higher degree thesis (MD/PhD).

NIAA Opportunities
NIAA 2017 Round 1 grants
We're pleased to announce that 2017 NIAA Round 1 grants are now open for applications. Funding is being offered by AAGBI, Anaesthesia, Anaesthesia-Wiley, BJA/RCoA - including a new International Collaborative Grant - NACCSGBI, OAA, RA-UK, and VASGBI.

NIAA Research Council Chair
Applications are invited for the role of Chair of the NIAA Research Council, which will become vacant in June 2017. The post holder will be expected to provide senior leadership and academic support to the NIAA Research Council. He/she will develop and deliver the research strategy of the NIAA as set out by the NIAA Board and oversee the award of grant funding. Our funding portfolio to date is approximately £7.5 million in eight full years of activity.
The post holder will also be required to build strategic relationships with funding partners to support research in national priority areas and support the 'research aware', 'research ready' and 'research experienced' through the development and promotion of training opportunities. The post holder is a co-opted member of the NIAA Board. The position is a fixed-term post of three years. There is no remuneration for the role, although reasonable expenses can be paid. NIAA Trainee Representative
We are also inviting applications for the role of co-opted Trainee Representative on the Research Council of the NIAA.
Trainees who hold a National Training Number in Anaesthesia, and are either Academic Clinical Fellows, Academic Clinical Lecturers or are undertaking/have completed an MD(Res) or PhD are eligible to apply.
The successful applicant will be required to attend two NIAA Research Council meetings per year as well as other internal meetings, and participate in activities to promote and enhance the work of the NIAA and academic anaesthesia in the UK including attending external events.
This role is one of two Trainee Reps currently co-opted on the NIAA Research Council. More information on the role is available here.

National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) Vacancies
The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) is seeking to appoint a Quality Improvement (QI) Lead to work on a high profile national audit. NELA is part of the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP), overseen by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) and funded by NHS England and the Welsh Government.
NELA is also seeking a candidate to lead the project team at a national level as NELA Clinical Lead. Both posts will commence as soon as possible, but no later than 1st April 2017.

The John Snow Anaesthesia Intercalated Awards 2017
Applications for the John Snow Intercalated Awards are currently being accepted.
Awards will be offered by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI)/Anaesthesia, the British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA)/Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA), and the Neuroanaesthesia and Critical Care Society of Great Britain and Ireland (NACCSGBI). We are particularly encouraging applications from students at institutions in Wales and Ireland (both RoI & NI).
Designed to encourage medical student interest in anaesthesia and its related disciplines, these awards go to the student and not the supervisor/institution and are meant to contribute towards living costs.
The awards are intended for students who are studying as part of a programme of work leading towards a registered medical qualification. Therefore students of intercalated Bachelors or Masters degrees are eligible to apply. Applications from students undertaking either programme of study will be reviewed in parallel.
o The AAGBI/Anaesthesia and BJA/RCoA are each offering awards of £2,000
o NACCSGBI is offering one award of £1,000
Project running costs will be funded by the supervisor/institution.
Each institution can submit a maximum of four applications, so some co-ordination between supervisors will be required.

Other News
Joint RCoA/NIHR Award winners
Following the joint RCoA/NIHR Clinical Research Network Award scheme launched in 2016, we wish to offer congratulations to the two well-deserved winners.
Dr Gudrun Kunst (King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) received the Consultant award, and Dr James Robert Sheehan (Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) received the Trainee award. Both have received prizes of £1,000 each, and will be formally presented their awards at the RCoA Anniversary meeting in March. For more information please click here.
RCoA Anniversary Meeting: Landmarks in UK Anaesthesia
The Royal College of Anaesthetists are delighted to announce that the RCoA's Royal Patron, HRH Princess Royal, will be attending this year's Anniversary meeting.
The 2017 Anniversary Meeting is the flagship event of the RCoA's year-long 25th Anniversary, celebrating the College gaining its Royal Charter. The event will highlight all the significant developments that have taken place during these 25 years whilst keeping a clear view to the future.
The programme will cover anaesthesia, pain and intensive care with sessions from Professor Kate Leslie who will be delivering the John Snow Oration, Professor Simon Howell will be delivering his Macintosh Professorship lecture, and Professor Lord Ara Darzi will be speaking about Robotic surgery. Dr Ramani Moonesinghe will be delivering a talk titled Can we make quality improvement "normal"?

BJA/ARS Travel Bursaries 2017
The British Journal of Anaesthesia and Anaesthetic Research Society have up to 10 travel bursaries of £1,000 each available to support members of research active departments presenting their work at the joint meeting of the BJA/ARS Research Forum, with the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA) to be held in Washington, DC from 4th - 5th May 2017.
Abstracts for poster presentations can be submitted via the AUA website from December 2016, before the closing date of Tuesday 31st January 2017.
To apply for a bursary you will need to be a member of the BJA/ARS Research Forum, and send a copy of your submitted abstract by Wednesday 1st February 2017.

HSRUK Symposium 2017 - call for abstracts and sessions
The HSRUK Symposium 2017 presents the leading edge of health services research. The programme is multidisciplinary and includes research presentations and posters, and plenaries from research and service leaders. Delegates attend from a range of organisations: NHS and social care bodies, patient and citizen groups, universities and research institutes, industry and commercial knowledge consultancy, central and local government and the third sector. The event will be held 6-7 July 2017 at Nottingham Conference Centre.
The 2017 Symposium abstract call comprises:
• Call for individual abstracts (presentation and/or poster)
• Call for session proposals
Abstracts on all aspects of health services and policy research are welcome, and submissions are being invited across 12 themes including Quality, Emergency Care and Patient Voice. The Symposium 2017 call also includes the option to submit joint proposals to run sessions or workshops.

BMA foundation for medical research grants 2017
The 2017 BMA foundation for medical research grants is now open for applications.
The BMA provide approximately £500,000 of research funding annually, this year across 11 different grants. Funding areas range from heart disease to schizophrenia to the impact of working pressures on the medical profession.
Applications are invited from medical practitioners and/or research scientists for research in progress or prospective research. The closing date for applications is Friday 3rd March 2017.

Call for Trainee abstracts
Trainee anaesthetists are invited to submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation at the 2017 GAT Annual Scientific Meeting, being held at Cardiff City Hall 5-7 July 2017.

Thomas Boulton Anaesthesia History Prize 2017
The AAGBI and the History of Anaesthesia Society will award a cash prize of £500 to a trainee or medical student member of the AAGBI for an original essay of 4000-6000 words on a topic related to the history of anaesthesia, intensive care or pain management.
The £500 prize and an engraved medal will be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel, and the winner will be invited to present the paper at the GAT Annual Scientific Meeting. Certificates of merit may also be awarded to other entries of high standard.
All submissions must be made by email by Monday 20 February 2017, 23:59.

VASGBI Trainee Development Grants
The Vascular Anaesthesia Society of Great Britain and Ireland invites applications for Trainee Research and Audit Development grants of up to £5,000 for the purpose of supporting research and audit projects in the field of vascular anaesthesia undertaken by anaesthetic trainees. The purpose of these awards is to advance both the care of patients undergoing vascular procedures and the training and development of the vascular anaesthetists of the future.
Awards are open to all anaesthetic trainees in United Kingdom and Ireland not holding a substantive or locum consultant post. The trainee must be working in or affiliated with a department providing vascular anaesthetic services.
Applications will be considered for research and audit projects that can be undertaken during the course of training.
The deadline for applications is Friday 31 March 2017, 5pm.

Research Ethics Committees - seeking lay & expert members
The Health Research Authority is currently looking to expand their database of individuals who would be willing to be contacted to offer advice as a volunteer member - either lay or expert - to review a wide range of health research applications. It is not envisaged that this would be an onerous task with only a small number required each year - the minimum requirement is to attend around six meetings per year.
