Applications closing soon: POM CTN Chief Investigator scheme
The UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network is encouraging candidates to apply for the Chief Investigator mentoring scheme, which closes for applications next month.
The scheme is intended to provide training and mentorship for a small number of talented individuals who wish to lead their own clinical trials in perioperative medicine, and applicants will be existing members of the POM CTN Local or Principal Investigator schemes with a proven track record of recruitment to clinical trials.

Applications are welcomed from individuals of any clinical background of relevance to perioperative medicine. Those who would like to discuss the position informally before applying should contact the CTN.

Vacancy: HSRC Social Scientist
The NIAA Health Services Research Centre has an opportunity for a Social Scientist to work on two key projects:
- Qualitative (ethnographic) evaluation of the national Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP)
- Establishing a mobile embedded research unit (to be known as the Perioperative Improvement Research Laboratory - PIRL) to conduct mixed methods evaluations of novel services and innovations related to perioperative medicine, pain management and anaesthesia
The successful candidate will have experience of ethnographic methods (and be able to work independently using these methods), be familiar with the UK NHS system and ideally some experience of perioperative, pain or anaesthesia services, and will have experience supervising more junior researchers.
They will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well within a diverse academic and clinical team and will be able to undertake fieldwork in different geographic locations within the United Kingdom. They will also be working closely with members of the NIAA-HSRC Executive Management Board.
An award equivalent to a maximum of 0.5WTE is available for 3 years. The candidate must be working within a UK university to whom the grant can be awarded to provide salary backfill.

RCoA Grants & Prizes
If you've got an idea for a small anaesthesia-related research project and need funding to get you started, the NIAA facilitates several small grants funded by the RCoA which could help. The following awards are currently open for applications:
Ernest Leach Research Fund
Up to £2,500 available for research purposes
Sargant Fund
Up to £2,500 available for education and research purposes
Belfast Fund
Up to £600 available for educational purposes

RCoA Payne Stafford Tan - An Award for Clinical Excellence
The aim of this Award is to mark excellence in clinical practice, teaching or research in anaesthesia, critical care or pain management. It is open to any Fellow or Member of the College, and comprises a grant (to a maximum of £1,000) to be used for educational purposes.
Closing date: Friday 1 September 2017. Full criteria and how to apply are available here.
RCoA Maurice P Hudson Prize
This prize will be awarded to the anaesthetic or intensive care trainee who is the principal author of the best paper relating to the management of acutely ill patients published, or accepted for publication, in a recent peer reviewed journal. A prize of £500 is available this year.

RCoA Macintosh Professorship
Recipients of this award will have a national or international reputation in their field. Their curriculum vitae will be consistent with an individual who is performing at, or is on the cusp of, professorial level through research, innovation, and leadership. Those who show equivalent excellence in teaching and education will also be eligible for the award.
Recipients are required to give a keynote lecture at a meeting organised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists or its associated Faculties, other related organisations and specialist societies. The lecture is commemorated by the presentation of a certificate. Applications are open to Fellows and Members of the College and other clinicians and scientists involved in anaesthesia, critical care and pain management within the UK. Applications are considered by the NIAA Board.

Introduction to Academic Anaesthesia - 2 day course
19th & 20th September 2017

Book your study leave now for this joint meeting between the London Academy of Anaesthesia and the NIAA, taking place in London across 2 days.
Aimed at introducing anaesthesia trainees to research methods and opportunities, the two days provide a good opportunity to hear about Randomised Controlled Trials, Systematic Reviews, Quality Improvement and tips for getting your work in print and getting a grant.
The event is free of charge and carries 10 CPD points. It is being held at the Wesley Hotel, Euston, London.

RCoA Event: Updates in Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management
6th - 8th September 2017
RCoA, Churchill House, London
A three-day meeting which consists of lectures, each of which is followed by ample time for discussion. The event is intended for doctors engaged in clinical anaesthesia, pain management and intensive care medicine (i.e. Consultants, Staff and Associate Specialist Grades or their overseas equivalent) who feel they may benefit from a refresher meeting in the latest advances in areas of practice they may be exposed to regularly or only occasionally. To achieve this goal, experts will present up-to-date information on a wide range of topics. Some lectures will also inform participants on advances in basic sciences relevant to anaesthesia and allied specialities.
The learning objectives:
• Facilitate familiarisation with the latest developments in the various areas covered
• Make you aware of progress in a structured manner
• Better understand how changes in practice will benefit your patients

RCoA 25th Anniversary Photography Competition
In collaboration with the Royal Photographic Society the RCoA is running a photographic competition open to Fellows and Members of the College to celebrate the RCoA's 25th Anniversary.
The theme for the competition is 'In Safe Hands'. Participants are being encouraged to interpret this theme creatively. There are cash prizes to be won and the winning entries will take pride of place at the College and be used in the promotion of our specialty.
Also as part of the RCoA 25th Anniversary events, there are a series of free online ARIES Talks featuring a variety of high profile speakers delivering short, informative and entertaining talks on areas of relevance to anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.
