Applications closing soon: POM CTN Chief Investigator scheme
The UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network is encouraging candidates to apply for the Chief Investigator mentoring scheme, which closes for applications next week.
The scheme is intended to provide training and mentorship for a small number of talented individuals who wish to lead their own clinical trials in perioperative medicine, and applicants will be existing members of the POM CTN Local or Principal Investigator schemes with a proven track record of recruitment to clinical trials.
The Chief Investigator scheme was recently featured in the August edition of Anaesthesia News in an editorial authored by Dr Phil Moore and Prof Rupert Pearse. Read the article on page 12 here.

Vacancy: HSRC Social Scientist
The NIAA Health Services Research Centre has an opportunity for a Social Scientist to work on two key projects:
- Qualitative (ethnographic) evaluation of the national Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP)
- Establishing a mobile embedded research unit (to be known as the Perioperative Improvement Research Laboratory - PIRL) to conduct mixed methods evaluations of novel services and innovations related to perioperative medicine, pain management and anaesthesia
The successful candidate will have experience of ethnographic methods (and be able to work independently using these methods), be familiar with the UK NHS system and ideally some experience of perioperative, pain or anaesthesia services, and will have experience supervising more junior researchers.
They will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well within a diverse academic and clinical team and will be able to undertake fieldwork in different geographic locations within the United Kingdom. They will also be working closely with members of the NIAA-HSRC Executive Management Board.
An award equivalent to a maximum of 0.5WTE is available for 3 years. The candidate must be working within a UK university to whom the grant can be awarded to provide salary backfill.

RCoA Grants & Prizes
There are still a few days left to apply for funding from one of the small research grants funded by the RCoA, which are administered via the NIAA. The following awards are still open for applications until Friday 1st September:
Ernest Leach Research Fund
Up to £2,500 available for research purposes
Sargant Fund
Up to £2,500 available for education and research purposes
Belfast Fund
Up to £600 available for educational purposes

RCoA Payne Stafford Tan - An Award for Clinical Excellence
The aim of this Award is to mark excellence in clinical practice, teaching or research in anaesthesia, critical care or pain management. It is open to any Fellow or Member of the College, and comprises a grant (to a maximum of £1,000) to be used for educational purposes.
Closing date: Friday 1 September 2017. Full criteria and how to apply are available here.
RCoA Maurice P Hudson Prize
This prize will be awarded to the anaesthetic or intensive care trainee who is the principal author of the best paper relating to the management of acutely ill patients published, or accepted for publication, in a recent peer reviewed journal. A prize of £500 is available this year.

RCoA Macintosh Professorship
Recipients of this award will have a national or international reputation in their field. Their curriculum vitae will be consistent with an individual who is performing at, or is on the cusp of, professorial level through research, innovation, and leadership. Those who show equivalent excellence in teaching and education will also be eligible for the award.
Recipients are required to give a keynote lecture at a meeting organised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists or its associated Faculties, other related organisations and specialist societies. The lecture is commemorated by the presentation of a certificate. Applications are open to Fellows and Members of the College and other clinicians and scientists involved in anaesthesia, critical care and pain management within the UK. Applications are considered by the NIAA Board.

Call for Perioperative abstracts
The Society of Academic & Research Surgery (SARS) is inviting abstracts for the Perioperative Section of the 2018 SARS Annual Meeting, which is being held at the University of Nottingham on Thursday 11th January 2018.
All abstracts must be submitted online by the closing date of 9th September 2017. The top abstracts selected will be invited to compete for the highly prestigious Patey Prize. The remainder of those selected will be invited to present as an Oral Presentation.
Other prizes are also being offered, including the Future Projects Prize for trainee abstracts on a novel research project currently in development, and the Norman Williams Prize and Kevin Burnand Prize for the best clinical paper and the best experimental/basic science paper presented in any of the Oral Presentation sessions.

Introduction to Academic Anaesthesia - 2 day course
19th & 20th September 2017

This joint meeting between the London Academy of Anaesthesia and the NIAA, is aimed at those who are new to or interested in academic anaesthesia and research and is taking place in London across 2 days.
Aimed at introducing anaesthesia trainees to research methods and opportunities, the two days provide a good opportunity to hear about Randomised Controlled Trials, Systematic Reviews, Quality Improvement and tips for getting your work in print and getting a grant.
The event is free of charge and carries 10 CPD points. It is being held at the Wesley Hotel, Euston, London.

National Research Collaborative Meeting 2017
The National Research Collaborative Meeting is a pan-specialty trainee research meeting which brings together students and trainees involved in collaborative research across the UK.
This year's meeting is being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Birmingham City Centre on Thursday 30th November 2017. Registration is free, with a refundable deposit. Online registration is now open here.
This year the organisers have aimed to build the meeting around the twin themes of 'Research Challenges' and Perioperative care, and are keen for as many anaesthetists and intensivists as possible to join with surgeons and create a truly interdisciplinary meeting.

Joint RCoA/NIHR Research Awards 2017
In partnership with the NIHR CRN (Clinical Research Network), the RCoA is pleased to announce for the second consecutive year joint research awards which aim to recognise outstanding contributions from NHS clinicians to the conduct of NIHR CRN portfolio studies.
Applicants must be NHS clinicians (clinical academics are not eligible) and must be a Member or Fellow of the RCoA. There are three categories for entry: Consultant (including SAS), Trainee (individual) and this year there is a Trainee Research Network category. Each award carries a £1,000 prize.
To apply, there is a short application form to complete. The deadline for applications is Friday 3rd November 2017.
The awards will be presented during an RCoA event in 2018. Award winners will be notified of the event date and location in advance, and complimentary places will be allocated for winners to attend.
