NIAA: 10 Years & 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting
2018 is the tenth anniversary since the NIAA was set up and this year's NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting will be marking this very special occasion!
Bookings for the event are open and we encourage you to join us on Monday 21st May at the RCoA for what will be an interesting and useful day. The event programme includes updates on NIAA projects including the Health Services Research Centre (HSRC) and the UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network (POMCTN). We will also be running the NIAA Research Award for the 3rd year (details below).

NIAA Research Award 2018
The 2018 NIAA Research Award is still open for applications for a few days so be quick if you're planning to apply. This award aims to promote and encourage current and active researchers within the field of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine or pain research in the UK.
It will be awarded to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in scientific research relevant to anaesthesia, perioperative care or pain and will allow new investigators to achieve recognition through presentation at a national meeting with peer-review. There is also a first prize of £500 along with a gold embossed certificate which is presented to the winner on the day.
Applicants are invited to submit a summary of their 'body of work', this should be fully referenced and state the author's contribution. A 'body of work' will include a project that covers a clear, evidence-based research question, appropriate methods, well-conduced study/studies and statistical analysis of results drawing to a valid conclusion. A 'body of work' would typically be the equivalent to two or more research papers on one subject area or from a higher degree thesis (MD/PhD).
The closing date for applications is Monday 2 April 2018.

NIAA Vacancy: Board Chair
We are still accepting applications for the NIAA Board chair position, which will become vacant later this summer when Prof Monty Mythen's first term ends.
The post holder will oversee the strategic direction of the NIAA and provide leadership for all aspects of NIAA work. They will need to be able to develop and maintain good working relationships with NIAA funding partners to strategically support research in national priority areas, as well as working with other major funders such as MRC, NIHR, and the Wellcome Trust to explore funding opportunities.

John Snow Anaesthesia Intercalated Awards 2018
Open to intercalating medical students studying on either bachelors or masters medical degree programmes and conducting (or plan to conduct) a research project relating to anaesthesia, these awards of up to £2,000 are designed to encourage early stage engagement in academic research in anaesthesia and its related topics.
The individual awards are to contribute towards the student's personal living costs. Applications require input from the student and their academic supervisor, and institutions can submit a maximum of four applications.
Awards of £2,000 each are being offered by NIAA founding partners AAGBI/Anaesthesia and BJA/RCoA, and a £1,000 award is being offered by NIAA funding partner NACCSGBI. More information on the John Snow Award is available here.

NIAA 2018 Round 1 Grants
The first round of NIAA research funding for 2018 has grant awards of up to £100,000 available from a number of NIAA partners, including a new joint grant funded by the AAGBI & ACTACC.

BJA/NIAA Research Methodology Workshop
Whether you're new to research or already research active, the NIAA is holding a joint workshop with the British Journal of Anaesthesia on Thursday 19 April 2018 to introduce participants to the ways in which good research should be conducted and presented. If you're applying for NIAA research grant funding we'd particularly recommend attending.
