Academic Training Guidance 2018

Academic training is essential for the future of the specialty of anaesthesia, and the provision of opportunities to gain research training is a priority for the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia.

To that end, the NIAA has produced an updated guidance document for anaesthesia trainees on the academic opportunities available to them.

This guidance aims to cover the range of options open to trainees at various stages of their anaesthetic training careers. These include:

  • Core training in research for all trainees
  • Exposure to research at a local level (e.g. institutional or regional research fellowships, and trainee network projects)
  • Training posts that explicitly recruit aspiring clinical academics, and provide them with time to develop research plans and funding applications at pre- and post-doctoral levels, e.g. NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships (ACF) and Clinical Lectureships (CL) respectively
  • Higher degree training through a University (Masters, MD and PhD)

This guidance was produced by Dr Dan Martin, the NIAA Academic Training Coordinator.
