POMCTN Autumn Meeting 2018

19-20 November 2018

There's now just over two weeks until the UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network (POMCTN) Autumn Meeting on 19 & 20 November 2018, and it's not too late to book your place and join us. This is the first time the meeting will be held across two days and we're pleased to be able to showcase the growth of the Network since its official launch in 2016.

There is a packed agenda for the meeting including Ask the Experts sessions on patient recruitment, patient and public involvement, and starting out as PI. Plus the chance to hear about research proposals covering topics such as an inspiratory muscle training RCT and a study on recovery after colorectal surgery. There will be lots of opportunity for questions, networking and discussion and there are also sessions focused on trials-based skills training.

The single day delegate rate is £60, or you can make a saving by booking both days for £100. There is a 25% discount for trainees, research nurses, and medical students. Click here for details of how to book.

The Francis Crick Institute PhD for Clinicians scheme

Applications are currently being invited for the Francis Crick Institute 2019 doctoral fellowships for clinicians. These fellowships provide an opportunity for talented clinicians passionate about research, with a strong academic track record, to perform biomedical discovery research while following a three-year clinical PhD programme. The Crick's multidisciplinary research aims to understand why disease develops and to help improve disease diagnosis, prevention and treatment.

Successfully appointed Fellows will be based at the Crick with a primary supervisor from the Institute, and a secondary supervisor from one of its five London-based clinical PhD programme partners.

A variety of PhD projects are available, with funding from the Crick, Cancer Research UK, NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital BRC and NIHR University College London Hospitals BRC. Applications must be received by Midday on Tuesday 13 November 2018.

Regional clinical research fellowship vacancies in Health Services Research

The NIAA Health Services Research Centre (HSRC) based at the RCoA, in conjunction with the UCL Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) and the University of Nottingham are currently recruiting for up to eight clinical research fellows to work on national health services research projects for one year, from August 2019.

The projects available include the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA), the RCoA's Seventh National Audit Project (NAP7 - see below for more details on this project), Data Science, and others. Each of the posts will be linked to a clinical commitment at one of nine partner hospitals in Middlesborough, London, Nottingham, Exeter and Bath.

Applications must be submitted by 9am on Monday 26 November 2018. Interviews will be held at the RCoA on Friday 7 December 2018 - applicants should ensure they will be available to attend this interview date.

NAP7 Clinical Lead

The Seventh National Audit Project (NAP7) of the Royal College of Anaesthetists will examine Perioperative Cardiac Arrest and the College is inviting applications for a NAP7 clinical lead, which will be a fixed term appointment to lead and deliver the project.

NAP7 will be managed by the NIAA Health Services Research Centre (HSRC) and the successful candidate will work closely with the HSRC clinical leadership. The HSRC manages the National Audit Projects on behalf of the RCoA, and will provide administrative and organisational support for NAP7. The role will span the duration of the project, expected to start in February 2019 and run for three to four years.

Applications are to be submitted by Midday on Monday 10 December 2018 and interviews will be on Monday 7 January 2019. Interested candidates are advised to discuss the role with HSRC leadership before applying, by contacting hsrc@rcoa.ac.uk.

NIAA Academic Trainee web content update

The NIAA is committed to the academic advancement of anaesthetists in training and to support this we have a host of resources and information available on our website, which have recently been refreshed with new content.

If you're a trainee that's wondered what it might be like to get involved with research but think it's just for 'academics', or don't know how to get started, you can visit our website and take a look at the Academic Training Guidance 2018 produced by the NIAA Academic Training Coordinator Dr Dan Martin, which is a good place to begin. We also have a number of first-hand experience stories from trainees actively engaged in research, as well as guidance for ARCP panels for trainees undertaking research placements.

There's lots of information on academic training available and Dr Martin is working to develop new materials over the coming months. If you have any questions you can contact Dr Martin and the NIAA Trainee Representatives Dr Annemarie Docherty and Dr Andrew Owen, and take a look at the resources available, through the Trainee pages on the NIAA website here.

BMA Foundation for Medical Research Grants

The British Medical Association (BMA) Foundation for Medical Research provides approximately £700,000 of research funding annually, this year across 11 different grants covering a range of research areas including paediatrics, gastroenterology, and public health relating to cancer. All grants have National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) partnership status.

Details of the 2019 grants have now been confirmed and all grant categories can be viewed on the BMA Foundation website here. Applications are invited from medical practitioners and/or research scientists for research in progress or prospective research.

Applications for the 2019 grant round will open on the BMA Foundation website from 1 January 2019 - www.bmafoundationmr.org.uk. The deadline for applications is 1 March 2019.

Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowships Round 11

The Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowships are designed to encourage scientific collaboration between the UK and the Middle East, through short-term exchange visits, allowing researchers to meet experts in their field, learn new techniques and develop plans for future joint work.

The next round of fellowships is now open for applications from medical and non-medical graduates who can show a commitment to a career in research. Applicants will typically be at post-doctoral level. The deadline for applications is 4pm, Tuesday 15 January 2019. For more information on how to apply and eligibility criteria click here.
