NIAA 2019 Round 1 Grants
The first round of NIAA research funding for 2019 has grant awards of up to £100,000 available from a number of NIAA partners, including a new joint grant funded by the Association of Anaesthetists & Barema.

All applications for NIAA grants need to provide details of any patient/public involvement in the proposed research study. You can get support for PPI in a number of ways, including applying to the NIAA-HSRCs' Patient, Carer, Public Involvement & Engagement (PCPIE) Group which is made up of committed members of the RCoA Lay Committee who have a particular interest in clinical research. The closing date for all funding applications is noon, Friday 26 April 2019.
John Snow Anaesthesia Intercalated Awards 2019
Open to intercalating medical students studying on either bachelors or masters medical degree programmes and conducting (or plan to conduct) a research project relating to anaesthesia, these awards of up to £2,000 are designed to encourage early stage engagement in academic research in anaesthesia and its related topics.
The individual awards are to contribute towards the student's personal living costs. Applications require input from the student and their academic supervisor, and an institution can submit a maximum of four applications.
Awards of £2,000 each are being offered by NIAA founding partners Association of Anaesthetists/Anaesthesia and BJA/RCoA, and awards of £1,000 award are being offered by NIAA funding partner NACCSGBI. More information on the John Snow Award is available here.
The closing date for applications is 5pm, Tuesday 30 April 2019.
Joint RCoA/NIHR Research Awards
Recognising NHS consultants and trainee doctors who are active in research
The College, in partnership with the NIHR CRN (Clinical Research Network), is awarding a third year of research prizes to recognise outstanding contributions from NHS consultants and trainees - including trainee networks - in the conduct of NIHR CRN portfolio studies.
Applicants must be NHS clinicians (clinical academics are not eligible) and must be a member or fellow of the RCoA. There are three award categories for entry:
- Consultant (including SAS doctors)
- Anaesthetists in training - individual
- Anaesthetists in training - network
Each award carries a £1,000 prize.
To apply there is a short form to complete and the deadline is midnight, Tuesday 30 April 2019.
The awards will be presented during an RCoA-organised event in 2019. Award winners will be notified of the event date and location in advance, and complimentary places will be allocated for winners to attend.

Recruitment: RCoA Centre for Perioperative Care - Clinical Director & Fellow
The College is inviting applications for an exciting opportunity to lead the delivery of perioperative care across the NHS in collaboration with cross-specialty national stakeholders.
Building on the success of its world-leading Perioperative Medicine Programme, the Royal College of Anaesthetists is establishing a cross-specialty Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) dedicated to the promotion, advancement and development of perioperative care. CPOC will facilitate closer and more effective cross-organisational working, changing inpatient pathways and integrating services through a multi-disciplinary team approach.
CPOC is now inviting applications for a CPOC Clinical Director.
The successful candidate will be an effective clinical leader with experience of leading change and delivering service improvement in perioperative care at a national level. This is an exciting opportunity for a senior clinical leader to shape the development of perioperative medicine in collaboration with cross specialty stakeholders and partners across the health and social care landscape.
The post is supported by the cost of 2 PAs per week, back-filled to the post-holder's employing trust. It is anticipated that the workload will fluctuate and the post-holder will need to be flexible enough to dedicate greater amounts of time to the Centre when this is required.
The Director will ideally commence their duties in June 2019 for a period of three years, subject to an annual review.

The Centre for Perioperative Care is also inviting applications for a CPOC Fellow who will undertake a 12-month Fellowship at 0.5 WTE to provide clinical support and knowledge to the development of standard setting, training curricular, professional education, quality improvement, research, and policy development in Perioperative Medicine. The Fellowship will involve a combination of service delivery at the appointee's employing trust and national working with the CPOC leadership at the RCoA.
The post-holder will ideally commence their duties in February 2020 for a period of 12-months, subject to regular performance review. A start date of August 2020 will also be considered. For Anaesthetic Trainees this post is eligible for out of programme training and up to six months' advanced training in Perioperative Medicine can be approved.

RCoA Opportunity: Bernard Johnson Advisor - Academic Anaesthesia
The College is inviting applications from interested individuals for the role of Bernard Johnson Advisor for Academic Anaesthesia.
The main purpose of this role is to be the lead for developing and maintaining advice and guidance for the smooth running of academic training and the maintenance of College standards in training.
The role requires a commitment of a minimum of 3 hours per week. Responsibilities include providing advice, guidance and expertise for the development and delivery of academic training in the UK, and to represent the College on all matters relating to academic training, including attendance at external meetings.
Criteria essential to the role includes individuals practising at Consultant, SAS or equivalent level in the NHS, as well as a Member/Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and in good standing. Also those who have previously been a Regional or Deputy Regional Advisor, College Tutor or Programme Director or trainer/supervisor in academia, anaesthesia, intensive care or pain medicine

SNAP-3 call for proposals
The NIAA Health Services Research Centre (NIAA-HSRC) is inviting submissions to the open call for the third Sprint National Anaesthesia Project (SNAP-3).
SNAPs are short observational clinical research studies that aim to recruit a large number of patients from as many NHS hospitals as possible in a short timeframe. An important feature of SNAPs is their engagement of 'grass-roots' anaesthetists, particularly trainees.
The last sprint project, SNAP-2, focused on the epidemiology of critical care provision after surgery, and before that SNAP-1 involved a 2-day evaluation of patient reported outcomes after anaesthesia.
If you've got a great idea for a short national observational study, which also meets the criteria here, then get in touch. Proposals must be submitted on the SNAP-3 proposal form before the deadline on Friday 31 May. Those who propose a topic which is shortlisted will be invited to present at a topic selection meeting on Monday 1st July.
