Principal Applicant:
Dr G McLeod University Dept of Anaesthesia, Dundee.

Title of Project:
Development of software and needle technology to visualise deep lying peripheral nerves with ultrasound.

Amount
£8,158

Abstract:
Traditional lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve block using anatomical landmarks does not guarantee adequate anaesthesia. Ultrasound visualization of sciatic and lumbar plexus nerves is difficult because patients are increasingly obese, and a need arises to develop new technologies. Our intention is to recreate ultrasound images in the engineering laboratory with tissue mimicking materials at the depths and resolutions seen clinically, then use the research software available commercially from Zonare to improve our images in patients. Our hope is that this will improve the resolution of the image, improve the quality of block and avoid intraneural or vascular injection.
