Title of Project:
Defining the role and therapeutic potential of the histamine H4 receptor (H4R) in acute chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Amount
£67,718

Abstract:
There is growing evidence that the histamine H4R is a valid therapeutic target for a range of inflammatory/immunological disorders. We have provided the first evidence for the presence of a functional neuronal H4R in the mammalian brain, suggesting expanding roles and clinical potential for the H4R in neurology and psychiatry. Furthermore, we have obtained immunological evidence for the presence of H4R on sensory neurons, and H4R antagonists have been shown to be effective in a range of models for both inflammatory and neuropathic pain. This project will profile roles for the new receptor in nociceptive pathways and appraise the translational potential of new synthetic ligands and molecular probes provided by multidisciplinary European partners. We are funded by the ESF/COST scheme, an international network of researchers spanning over 20 countries with an overarching goal of expanding our knowledge of histiminergic signalling and its potential to lead to new effective therapeutic interventions.
