BJA/RCoA History PhD Studentship

The history of the first 100 years of the BJA

Dr Stephanie Snow

Background and rationale
The introduction of anaesthesia in the 1840s was a pivotal moment that shaped the world in which we now live. But there has been little historical research into the twentieth century history of anaesthesia. Since its creation in 1923, the BJA has played an important role in promoting and supporting the development of the specialty across the world. The forthcoming centenary in 2023 presents an opportunity to reflect and learn from the history of the first 100 years.

Methods
The project will use historical and social science methods and approaches including oral history, network analysis and text mining.

Outcomes
The project outcomes will be a successfully completed PhD thesis, a catalogue of BJA archive material, and various publications and web-based articles.

Implications
This work will produce new understandings of the role of the BJA in promoting knowledge and practice across research, education and training since 1923. These new understandings will be able to inform key contemporary debates.
